The Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA), founded in November 1966, is a regional center of excellence (COE) under the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO). SEAMEO was established a year earlier as a chartered international organization aimed at promoting cooperation in education, science and culture among Southeast Asian (SEA) countries comprised of Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and Timor-Leste. SEARCA’s directive is to strengthen institutional capacities in agricultural and rural development in SEA through graduate education, short-term training, research, and knowledge exchange.
Several short-term training programs have been developed to cater to policymakers, decision-makers, and leading specialists in the rural, agriculture, and environment sectors. Such trainings include: International Training Course on Responding to Changing Climate: Knowledge-based Strategies in Managing Risks in Agricultural Production, Executive Forum on Natural Resource Management (NRM): Natural Resources Knowledge Management, etc. On the research front, SEARCA’s current priority theme focuses on agricultural competitiveness and natural resource management toward food security and poverty reduction.
