Founded in 2006, the International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU) is an alliance of ten of the world's leading research universities united in their vision and commitment to educating future leaders.
Australian National University (ANU), Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich (ETH Zurich), National University of Singapore, Peking University, University of California, Berkeley, University of Cambridge, University of Copenhagen, University of Oxford, the University of Tokyo and Yale University.
The alliance is involved in the following activities: offering of intensive summer courses through the IARU Global Summer Program; organizing conferences with the participation of alliance academics, facilitating student exchange programs at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, developing joint/dual degree programs; and supporting faculty exchange among member institutions. It is also involved in several research projects. Under its Global Change scheme, the alliance is engaged in four specific research topics namely: energy, resources and the environment; global security; ageing, longevity and health; and women and men in globalizing universities. Some activities under the Energy, Resources and the Environment research theme include annual workshops since 2006 and the International Symposium on Sustainability Science held in Sep 21-22 2006. IARU also held the International Scientific Congress “Climate Change: Global Risks, Challenges and Decisions”, last Mar 10-12, 2009 in Copenhagen, Denmark.
